I have a few scraps projects that I would like to do,
but just never seem to get around to them.
Thanks to the Refashion Co-Op book give away,
I decided to make a few projects this week.
Last night I made this snake from scraps of fabric.
Want to make your own?
Now you can...
Read on to find out how...
What you will need:
Scraps of fabric, stuffing, buttons for eyes, pins, rotary cutter, cutting board, ruler and of course needle and thread. A sewing machine is optional; you can do this by hand.
For the top part of the snake:
Cut fourteen 2"x3" rectangles,
a 3"x3"square,
a 3"x4" rectangle
and six 1/2"x 6" strips.
Fold the 3"x3" square in half and with the fold on the left, cut a curved line from the top left corner to the bottom right corner.
This is the head of the snake.
Fold the 3"x4" rectangle in half and with the fold on the left, cut a straight line from the top left corner to the bottom right corner.
This is the tail.
To make the tongue:
Sew three strips together like so:
Making sure the strips do not come apart.
Pin the 2 sets of three strand braids to the couch like I did
or to anything else for stability.
and braid each braid the same length, about 1".
Combine the braids and start braiding a braid with all six strands to about 2".
Stitch back and forth a few times to make sure the braid does not unravel, cut off excess fabric.
For the body:
Stitch together the head, all of the rectangles and tail, right sides together, along the long sides with a 1/4" seam.
Iron all the seams so that they lie flat.
For the bottom part of the body:
Either cut from one single piece of fabric, if you have one long enough, or sew a few pieces together and cut from that. Make sure to iron the bottom piece as well.
Place the top part of the snake and cut the bottom part to match the top.
With right sides together sandwich the tongue between the top and bottom pieces of the snake, with the fork of the tongue on the inside of the snake, facing toward the tail.
Stitch back and forth a few times to make sure the tongue will not get ripped out.
Stitch a 1/4" seam all the way around, leaving about 4" open on one side of the snake.
Turn snake right side out, stuff with stuffing and blind stitch the opening closed.
Sew on the buttons for eyes
and voila! You have a snake!
Have fun making your own snake!
